Meuchelberg [29]
Heimbach
Easy hike with picturesque Eifel panoramas
On the 5 km circular hiking tour "Meuchelberg [29]" near Heimbach, you can enjoy impressive Eifel views of the climatic health resort of Heimbach, the Heimbach reservoir, Hengebach Castle and the Art Nouveau hydroelectric power station as well as wonderful natural paths. The popular Rursee lake can also be seen. The climb up the mountain is particularly worthwhile in spring and fall, when the trees reveal the view of the reservoir thanks to the lack of leaves.
Idyllic Heimbach
The starting point of the hiking trail is the "Über Rur" parking lot in tranquil Heimbach. Due to its population, it is the smallest town in North Rhine-Westphalia. Visitors will not be disappointed: with its quaint half-timbered houses, medieval Hengebach Castle and idyllic location on the edge of the Eifel National Park, Heimbach is the ideal starting point for excursions into nature. Before your hike, you can find out more about the national park and regional hiking trails at the National Park Gate.
Eifel loop and oak forests on the Meuchelberg
Once you arrive on the Meuchelberg, the so-called Eifel Loop is already waiting for you. The unusual curved bench offers space for two people sitting opposite each other. It thus reflects the communication on a hike. So lean back with your companion and chat about the picturesque panoramic views. You can also spot numerous shrubby oaks on the southern slope. This unusual picture shows the remains of the former coppice forestry. Trees were cut down to just above the ground here due to the high demand for firewood for charcoal piles.
Enjoy a leisurely feast in the spa town
Back in Heimbach, you can fortify yourself in various (ice cream) cafés, bistros or restaurants. In addition to classic dishes such as schnitzel, you can also enjoy regional specialties such as Eifel-Flönz (fried black pudding). So you can round off your day of hiking in the Eifel in comfort.
