Laacher Rundweg - Geopfad-Route L
Wassenach
Your hike takes you around Lake Laach, the largest volcanic lake in the Eifel. Several information boards on Georoute L explain the volcanic history of the region. In some places, there is even bubbling in the water - carbon dioxide rises here, these so-called mofettes reveal the volcanic origin of the lake. There is a medieval drainage tunnel on the southern shore of the lake. It serves as flood protection for the Maria Laach monastery complex.
Beautifully situated, the impressive Maria Laach Abbey and a stone nature trail invite you to linger. Nearby, the Seehotel Maria Laach also offers the opportunity to take a break. The route then continues along the lakeside circular trail.
A forest path leads you to the "Lydia Tower" for the crowning finale. From this viewing tower, you can enjoy an impressive view of Lake Laach and the Eifel landscape, even as far as the Siebengebirge on a clear day.
You can also find a detailed description with background information on the website of volcano park guide Konrad Friedgen: https://profirouten.de/eifel/geopfad-route-l-laacher-rundweg
Consideration and correct behavior in the nature reserve:
Natural landscapes such as Lake Laach offer a very special experience. Whether on foot or by bike - on beautiful days, nature lovers flock to beautiful places like Lake Laach. Unfortunately, this is often not without consequences. Sports and recreational use can affect sensitive habitats and also be a disturbance factor for many animal species. Consideration for nature is therefore becoming increasingly important - not least in order to preserve the experience value of the landscape for everyone. In order to counteract unnecessary noise and protect hikers and walkers, recreationists are asked to use only the designated parking spaces.
