Kurze Felspassage [07]

Kreuzau

Impressive rocks and far-reaching views

The "Kurze Felspassage" near Obermaubach has a lot to offer with impressive red sandstone cliffs, views over the reservoir and the surrounding Eifel landscape, a forest nature trail and playground. The 5 km circular route is particularly suitable for families. The eventful hike can be completed in around 2 hours and you can regain your strength in one of the cozy restaurants.

Obermaubach and the fish ladder

The small village of Obermaubach is part of the municipality of Kreuzau in the Rureifel region and is best known for its reservoir with adjoining fish ladder. The fish ladder is used by migratory fish such as salmon to cross the dam wall. A glass window below the kiosk provides exciting underwater views of passing fish - fun for young and old!

From Obermaubach to the forest chapel

The start of the circular tour is the parking lot opposite the "Café Flink" in Obermaubach. The route is marked with the signpost [07]. The first part of the route is a leisurely serpentine ascent up the Mausauel on forest paths. From the forest chapel at the top, you can enjoy wonderful Eifel views of the reservoir, the last hills of the North Eifel and the transition to the Jülich-Zülpicher Börde.

Red sandstone cliffs formed by the Rur

The imposing rock formations of the famous red sandstone cliffs will amaze you again and again along the way. But how were they formed? For more than two million years, the Rur river used water power to form the valley and mountainous rocky landscape that today provides us with impressive views.

Forest nature trail and playground

Continue through oak groves until you reach a crossroads where you leave the rock passage [07] and turn sharp right towards the Rurterrassen. On the last section, you will come to a forest nature trail that provides information about native trees and shrubs. The path finally leads to the forest playground, the final highlight for the little ones. After a good romp, you can relax on the sun terrace of the "Café Flink", at "Strepp am See", in the "Hotel am See" or in the "Kiosk Obermaubach" with coffee and cake and listen to the gentle splashing of the fish ladder.

The hiking trail is marked with no. 07.

The red sandstone cliffs pose a natural risk of falling rocks. Please keep your distance from the edges of the cliffs and do not stay below the rock faces. Observe warning signs and instructions to avoid accidents and protect nature.
