Klosterrunde [49]

Heimbach

Nature and enjoyment around Mariawald Abbey

The circular route marked "Klosterrunde 49" has a lot to offer: untouched nature, architectural highlights such as the Art Nouveau hydroelectric power station at the Heimbach reservoir, the impressive Mariawald Abbey or the centuries-old Hengebach Castle as well as fantastic views over the reservoir. From a culinary point of view, the circular tour also scores with cozy restaurants and delicious specialties.

Idyllic Heimbach

The starting point of the hiking trail is the tranquil Heimbach. Due to its population, it is the smallest town in North Rhine-Westphalia. Visitors will not be disappointed: with its quaint half-timbered houses and idyllic location on the edge of the Eifel National Park, Heimbach is the ideal starting point for excursions into nature. Before setting off on a hike, visitors can find out more about the national park and regional hiking trails at the National Park Gate.

From Heimbach to Mariawald Abbey

The 9 km long, moderately difficult tour starts at the "Über Rur" parking lot. From here, the route first follows the lakeside path to the Way of the Cross, which leads up to the abbey via 14 stations. With its gigantic monastery wall, monastery church, monastery store and restaurant, the old monastery is definitely one of the highlights of the hike. Guests can enjoy the famous Mariawald pea stew, the popular monastery liqueur and fresh Trappist beers.

Via the Herbstbachtal valley back to Heimbach

Passing the Mariawald war cemetery, the route then leads through the beautiful Herbstbach valley down to the Heimbach reservoir. If you want to take a break here and enjoy some refreshments, the "terrace by the lake" with a view of the reservoir and the Eifel National Park is the perfect spot. The route continues past the impressive Art Nouveau power station along the reservoir. The path along the water - also called the "jungle path" by the locals - impresses with romantic footbridges, beautiful lake views and is easy to walk on. Back in Heimbach, a well-earned meal awaits hungry hikers.
