Dorfspaziergang Embken

Nideggen

Even in the Stone Age, people were drawn to the attractive location of "Em Becken". The fertile Bördeland and the wooded, wild Voreifel mountains offered the best living conditions. Added to this were the favorable climatic conditions and the abundance of water in the area. An "all-round feel-good package" that also allowed the Romans to settle here. They even cultivated wine. This was one of the reasons that made Embken the most prosperous municipality in the district of Nideggen in the late Middle Ages. Saint Agatha, to whom the local parish is dedicated, only holds a grapevine in Embken. And another cultivated plant is linked to the history of the village. It is the weaver's card. The large thistle-like plant was mainly cultivated in the 19th century and sold to the cloth industry to roughen fabrics. However, the idyllic Embken also knows how to shine in more recent times. For example, it was awarded the title of "Gold Village" in 1983 at national level in the "Our village has a future" competition and for many decades hosted one of the largest shooting festivals in the Rhineland. Take a leisurely stroll through the village on the Neffelbach and take away some of the sense of well-being that Embken has always given its residents.

Serenity instead of hustle and bustle. Embken exudes this attitude to life. The disused railroad station at the start of your village tour is almost a symbol of this. Along well-kept quarry and half-timbered houses, the path leads to the oldest estate in the village, the Paländer Hof. The later feudal farm was first mentioned in 1337 and today, after loving renovation, is a gem of regional building culture. However, as in every place in the world, there are cracks in the idyll. Several stumbling blocks in front of houses, a memorial on the village square and two information boards refer to the history of Embken's Jewish community. It had a stately synagogue in the "Kir(s)chland", where horses graze today. The destruction during the pogrom night put an end to centuries of Jewish life in the village. The Alte Schulstraße is home to two former school buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as a remarkable ensemble of listed feudal farms. They prove that education was of great importance in Embken early on. The same applies to religious life. The foundations of the tower of St. Agatha's Church are believed to date back to the 13th century, while the current church building dates back almost five centuries. The village center is completed by a former post office, the Fronhof and the former Gasthaus zur Post. A delightful detour then leads out of the village to the Antonius Chapel. Beautiful views over the Börde landscape are the reward for the easy climb. Also situated on a hill, the Jewish cemetery with 26 preserved gravestones touches you in silence.
