Baumpfad - RSa3
Saffig
Directions:
At the village square, take the main road downhill past the impressive baroque church of St. Cäcilia to the cemetery. Following the cemetery road, you will be directed onto a country lane which climbs briefly at the end. Keep left at the underpass and take the next path directly to the left. The path leads you through idyllic fields to the country road (L123), which you walk along for a short distance and then cross. Continue along country lanes, keeping left at the next fork in the road and following the path down to a meadow in a small wood. There you will see an imposing "Säulenhallen". Continue down the "Kreuzberg" along numerous wayside shrines, taking the second path on the right. On the following footpath, you have a beautiful view of the village and the Barrock church. At the end of the path, keep left twice and follow the path along a meadow into a small park. Cross this and you will reach Pöschstraße. Keep right there before turning left onto Neuwieder Straße, which leads back to the village square.
Places of interest along the way:
Baroque church of St. Cäcilia: The baroque church in Saffig is a special architectural gem. The famous Baroque master builder Balthasar Neumann (1687-1753) was commissioned as the architect. The client was the noble family of the Counts von der Leyen, who lived in Saffig Castle at the time.
Kreuzberg with portico: The pillared hall on the "Kreuzberg" was also built by the Counts von der Leyen in the 18th century. The path to the pillared hall is lined with numerous wayside shrines.
