Since ancient times, the garden has been seen as a reflection of paradise, aptly named "Garden of Eden": a place of peaceful equilibrium that delights, protects, and nourishes us.
Contrary to what one might assume, the garden is quite similar to the wilderness, as comparable laws apply here as well. The significant difference is that in the garden, the individual rules of humans take effect, rather than just those of nature.
We take control and can play the role of creator. The better we understand and respect the natural relationships, the more successful we will be - regardless of whether we aim for a rich yield of fruits and vegetables in our little paradise or the promotion of biodiversity.
Gardens cover about four percent of the land area of Germany - roughly the same as all nature reserves combined. Their importance for the protection of nature should therefore not be underestimated. More and more people are enjoying the opportunity to do something for the animal and plant world in their sphere right outside their door and to take pleasure in the colorful activity. Thus, natural gardens are very much in trend. But what must be done for natural diversity to thrive in the garden? What natural laws must be observed, and why does biodiversity increase in the garden when we dig, cut, plant, and mow?
