Book presentation "Cum tempore. The History of the University of Trier" (Publisher for History & Culture) with Prof. Dr. Michael Jäckel
The former president of the University of Trier, Prof. Dr. Michael Jäckel, presents his book on the history of the University of Trier. His term in office (2011-2023) included several anniversaries that intensified his existing interest in this history. In 2020, an exhibition was held at the Municipal Museum Simeonstift to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of the University of Trier (initially Trier-Kaiserslautern). Three years later, the founding of the university in 1473 was remembered. In 2023, this was 550 years ago.
The book reflects on this long tradition in three large sections. It looks at the late medieval university, the transition into the French education system starting in 1798, as well as numerous attempts at revival after 1815 and the challenging time after World War II. The long wait was rewarded in the late 1960s. The re-establishment, along with a reconstruction, is the focus of the third part.
It was rarely straightforward. This is vividly illustrated with various examples. However, the book is not only about Trier. It also places the ups and downs along the Moselle within the general history of universities. And why "Cum tempore"? This question is also answered.
