Lamawanderung zur Bärlauchzeit (Gruppentour)

eifelnomaden

2:30 PM

From March onwards, a sea of green leaves covers the humus-rich forest floor beneath the still-bare treetops: Here, wild garlic grows and emits its irresistible fragrance. We walk with our llamas to one of these wild garlic fields and carefully harvest some leaves.

Wild Garlic Hike

The Schönecker Switzerland is a little-known but incredibly diverse nature reserve in the Südeifel. It is characterized by deeply carved valleys with clear streams and vast plateaus. Rare orchids bloom on the valley slopes and slender junipers grow there. By the way, it owes its name to the gentian, which grows here just as it does in the Alps. In the beech forests, the ground is a floral carpet of March cups and wild garlic in spring. From May onwards, the broom, the "Eifel gold," also shines. Narrow hiking trails wind through the area, where you rarely encounter other people.

Our four-hour trek begins and ends directly below the ruins of the Schönecken Castle. After a brief introduction where you get to know the llamas, we start our tour into the nature reserve "Schönecker Schweiz".

Right at the start, we hike down into the valley of the Altburgbach. Orchard meadows and the slender silhouettes of juniper bushes accompany us. Then we ascend the ridge "Op Ischt" and enjoy the wide views on the plateau. Later, we dive into the beech forest and reach a hidden clearing where we take our first break. On the slopes above the Schalkenbach and Altburgbach, wild garlic grows. We learn to distinguish wild garlic from poisonous plants like lily of the valley and can— with due caution and in accordance with the nature reserve—also harvest some wild garlic. Following the Altburgbach, we return to our starting point after about four hours. Naturally, we will also share with you the best recipes, for example for delicious homemade wild garlic pesto.
