The Paris-born jazz musician Matthieu Chazarenc at the head of his quartet Canto has his compass pointing south. Indeed, influences from southern Spain, the Mediterranean, South America and not least the motherland of his south-western French origins resonate at the heart of Canto III. Obviously, his new compositions are about roots, because they provide a firm anchor and a stable base from which to rise, but also because they need protection and preservation. This need for authenticity and integrity is best expressed through Matthieu's desire to express the instruments' preferred natural timbre and their ability to deliver both pure and acoustic timbres. On his journey south, Mathieu can count on his trusted accompanists Christophe Wallemme on double bass, Sylvain Gontard on flugelhorn and Laurent Derache on accordion. Performing together since 2017, they have built up a great rapport over the course of numerous concerts and tours and have developed a unique musical identity that can be felt at every single concert. Each member of the quartet brings their own color and sound to the game to better showcase the original melodies composed by Matthieu.
