Ulmen
Experience point No. 1 of the hike "Witches, Executioners & Rogues" takes you into the Mai- und Brandenbusch and directly to the historic boundary of the ecclesiastical principalities of Trier and Cologne.
On a meadow path, you will reach an inconspicuous but impressive relic: a large earth mound in the adjacent forest. This unremarkable mound conceals the burial site of a tribal or clan chief, who found his final resting place here around 600 to 500 BC in a wooden plank chamber covered with earth. High-ranking personalities of this time were often buried with lavish wagons on which they were laid to rest. In the vicinity, individual graves of his followers were discovered in the mid-19th century during the construction of a road to Daun, but signs of settlement are still hidden beneath the layers of time.
Start your hike "Witches, Executioners & Rogues" with this exciting insight into the ancient history of the region.
