Schönecker Schweiz is a little-known but incredibly diverse nature reserve in the southern Eifel. It is characterized by deeply carved valleys with clear streams and wide plateaus. Rare orchids bloom on the valley slopes under slender junipers. Incidentally, it owes its name to the gentian, which grows here just as it does in the Alps. In the fall, the red-golden foliage enchants us. In winter, snow covers the forests and harvested fields.
Our two-hour gourmet hike begins and ends directly below the castle ruins of Schönecken. After an entertaining introduction where you get to know the llamas, we set off on our tour into the "Schönecker Schweiz" nature reserve.
Right at the beginning, we hike down into the valley of the Altburgbach stream. We are accompanied by orchards and the dark silhouettes of juniper bushes. We then climb the "Op Ischt" ridge and let our gaze wander as far as the High Fens. A little later, we enter the beech forest and reach a hidden clearing where the gentian blooms in late summer. We follow the Schalkenbach stream on its way down to the Nims and, after about an hour's walk, arrive at the "Nice Corner" crêperie, which is located directly on the riverbank.
Here we can choose between delicious sweet and savory crêpes: Do you fancy a crêpe with chocolate and banana, or a crêpe with cheese and onions? Would you prefer a freshly baked waffle or even a delicious sausage? Would you like a hot chocolate, soft drink or coffee to go with it? Would you like to warm up with a (non-alcoholic) mulled wine or tea? The choice is yours!
We sit together comfortably for about half an hour. Meanwhile, our llamas graze in the adjacent meadow. Then we head back up to Schönecker Schweiz and the ruins of Schönecken Castle. After another hour's hike, we reach our stable again. Here we say goodbye to our faithful companions, the llamas.
