Altstadt Buchhandlung
Reading in the Old Town Bookshop Wittlich
On 4 March 2026, Michael Schikowski welcomes you to the ‘Reading Evening with Jane Austen’ at the Altstadt Buchhandlung bookshop, Burgstraße 36, in Wittlich.
Jane Austen (1775–1817) created some of the most vivid female characters in world literature, women such as Elizabeth Bennet, Elinor Dashwood, Anne Elliot, Fanny Price and Emma Woodhouse. Sometimes sober, sometimes ironic, sometimes curious women. Through the words of these women, Jane Austen shows us the discovery of the female self. Jane Austen is one of the most successful authors from the early 19th century to the present day.
During her lifetime, not a single one of her novels was published under her name. Even within her family, her writing was unknown, as she always hid her manuscripts under a pile of unsuspicious papers when someone entered her room. She had her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, printed at her own expense in 1811 in three small-format books.
Her early work Northanger Abbey was followed by the novels Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma. The unsurpassed powers of observation she displayed in these novels made Jane Austen one of England's most important writers. Her enduring fame is based above all on her brilliant dialogues and humorous character sketches, the best of which will certainly be heard at this reading evening.
