Kultur- & Tagungsstätte Synagoge
Excursion into the history of Jewish life in Wittlich on October 31, 2025, starting at 2:30 p.m.
The Rheiniche Verein für Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz (Rhineland Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection), RV Eifel, invites you to attend on Friday, October 31, 2025, from 2:30 p.m. to approximately 5:00 p.m. Wittlich was home to a large Jewish community with a long and rich history until its annihilation by the Nazi dictatorship. In addition to the magnificent synagogue, numerous buildings around the market square that formerly belonged to Jewish citizens and the Jewish cemetery, which has been in use since 1672 and is considered the largest Jewish cemetery in the Eifel region, still bear witness to this history today.
The Emil Frank Institute, among others, keeps the memory of this destroyed community alive. Ms. Metzen-Wahl, who will lead the excursion, will introduce you to the Emil Frank Institute and take you on a tour of “Jewish Wittlich.” You will see the synagogue, former Jewish businesses, and buildings. The tour will conclude with a visit to the Jewish cemetery. This is located outside the town, so you will travel there by car and reach it after a short walk (approx. 5 minutes).
Meeting point/time: Emil Frank Institute, Schlossstraße 10, Wittlich at 2:30 p.m.
Speaker: Monika Metzen-Wahl
Registration: Dr. Sybille Bauer (dendrolab@t-online.de; Tel. 0176-47 34 12 82)
