A public lecture on new geological findings in the Vulkaneifel
Last summer, it became known that there are not just 77 maars in the Vulkaneifel, but more than 100. They were discovered during a comprehensive re-mapping as part of a research project by the UNESCO Geopark Vulkaneifel conducted by geoscientists. The research results also provided new insights into the volcanic history of the Eifel and the likelihood of future volcanic eruptions.
However, most of these newly discovered maars are not visible to the naked eye and could only be detected through the use of modern investigative methods. This discovery represents a significant advancement for geoscientific research in the Eifel. The unique global characteristic of the Vulkaneifel, with its particularly high maar density, is thus once again highlighted.
Dr. Andreas Schüller, the managing director of the Nature and Geopark Vulkaneifel, will report on these new research findings and their implications in a public lecture at the Eifelverein Bad Bertrich:
Date: Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 7 PM
Location: Kurfürstliches Schlösschen Bad Bertrich, Kurfürstenstraße 32
The lecture is aimed at all interested parties and requires no prior knowledge. Guests are warmly welcome.
