The High Fens

It is Belgium’s oldest and, at 4,500 hectares, also its largest nature reserve. Rare plant species have been preserved here, and protected animal species such as the capercaillie and the wildcat find refuge here. The western slope of the High Fens is crisscrossed by deeply incised valleys.

Half a dozen rivers—including the Rur, Olef, Warche, Schwalm, and Our—originate in the high moor, which acts as a natural reservoir.

Historic towns such as St. Vith, the cloth-making town of Eupen, and Malmedy—known for its leather and paper industries—are also located along these rivers. Belgium’s highest point is also located in the High Fens: the Signal Botrange (694 m).

The High Fens’ impressive natural beauty is best discovered during a hike or a walk. Trails and wooden walkways have been built through the raised bog for this purpose. However, to protect the unique flora and fauna, access is regulated and divided into three zones. Certain zones are accessible only when accompanied by certified nature guides.

The Botrange Nature Park Center is the ideal starting point for activities in the High Fens: it provides information on the development of the Fens landscape and offers regular guided tours.

Accessibility Note:

Access to the High Fens is divided into three areas:

• The B zones: Anyone may enter these areas, but only on designated trails and by adhering to certain rules.
• The C Zones: Only people accompanied by a certified nature guide are permitted to enter these areas.
• The D Zones: Access to these areas is strictly prohibited to the public.

Access may also be restricted due to current weather conditions (fire hazard) or other circumstances.
Dogs are not allowed in the nature reserve, but there are a number of trails where dogs may be taken on a leash.
