‘Der fröhliche Weinberg’ (The Merry Vineyard) performed by the Eifeler Burgtheater A light-hearted comedy by Carl Zuckmayer
Der fröhliche Weinberg (The Merry Vineyard) is a light-hearted comedy and a social satire that is still relevant today, raising and ironising themes such as generational conflict, greed and envy, idyllic homeland and xenophobia, but also celebrating love and life in a wine-growing region.
Jean-Baptiste Gunderloch wants to auction off half of his vineyard and enjoy a well-deserved retirement. The other half is to go to his daughter Klärchen as a dowry, but only if the relationship is fruitful. The inevitable happens: greedy wine merchants get heavily involved. There are arguments and fights, reconciliation and love, and after a night of heavy drinking, there are four bridal couples. And the realisation that love and life's work cannot simply be sold off cheaply.
‘The theatre is neither a schoolroom nor a seminary. People should either laugh or cry. Or both.’ Carl Zuckmayer.
