Guided tours to the volcanic lakes of the Eifel - Today's Maar: Gemündener Maar
Gemündener Maar is the smallest of the Daun maars, but has the steepest slopes due to its deep funnel. The completely forested slopes give the maar a mysterious, hidden flair. Even from the Lieser Valley, the maar can only be reached via a steep ascent. So it has always been a little out of the way. The Maar is well-known and popular as a bathing lake with its open-air swimming pool. The Maar is embedded in Lower Devonian rock strata. 420 million years of earth history have created the landscape - an unimaginably long time. We go in search of traces in the Maar funnel.
